Both of the Douglas Companies are committed to a philosophy of community service. An award is given annually to a graduate of the local high school who has been actively involved in one or more of the community’s many service organizations. In addition, several of the companies’ employees are members of the local volunteer fire department, requiring them to be called away to emergencies. In 2001 the Douglas Companies were presented with the Partnership Award by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour, Office of the Fire Marshal, for their outstanding contribution to the fire service in their community.

N.F. Douglas and Company Limited was a charter member of the North Queens Board of Trade, established in 1906. Both Douglas Companies are members of this organization today. The companies are also strong supporters of school activities, acting as sponsors for athletic programs and academic events.
